GEOGRAPHY AND TERRITORY
Ecuador is located in the western part of South America and surrounded by Colombia to the north, Peru to the south and the east, and the Pacific to the west. The country is divided into four regions: the western coastal lowlands (Costa) with five provinces, the Andean backbone (Sierra) with eleven provinces, the eastern jungle of the Amazonian basin (Oriente) with five provinces, and the Galapagos Islands with one province. The central highlands are composed of two volcanic ranges separated by a central valley, where much of the population lives. The country covers a surface area of about 283.560 Km2, including the Galapagos Islands and has a population of about 13 million people giving a population density of about 33.5 people per Km2. |
